OID Search & Lookup

Every value an SNMP agent can report lives at a specific OID — a dotted numeric address like 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1 — and this OID search resolves that address in either direction: paste a raw OID to look up the object it names, or search by name to find its OID, complete with its exact position in the MIB tree.

What's a MIB?

A MIB (Management Information Base) defines the data a device can report over SNMP — things like interface counters, system uptime, or CPU load — organizing each value under a name and a fixed numeric address. Every MIB module declares a tree of related objects, and a device typically implements dozens of MIBs at once: a handful of universal ones every vendor supports, plus whatever proprietary ones that specific vendor has published.

What's SNMP?

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is how routers, switches, servers, and other network devices report status and statistics back to monitoring tools. It's the transport; MIBs are the vocabulary that gives the data it carries any meaning. Most monitoring platforms — Zabbix, PRTG, LibreNMS, Prometheus's SNMP exporter, and plenty of others — rely on this same underlying protocol and MIB structure.

What's an OID?

An OID is the actual address of one piece of data — a dotted sequence like 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1, read from the root of a shared global tree down to one specific object. Names are for humans; OIDs are what actually gets sent over the wire. Every vendor's private MIBs live under that vendor's own reserved branch of the same tree, which is what lets one numbering system cover both universal and proprietary data.

What is a MIB browser?

A MIB browser is a tool for reading and navigating MIB files — the definitions that describe what data a device can report over SNMP. Instead of reading raw ASN.1 text by hand, a MIB browser renders each object's name, OID, syntax, and description in a searchable, navigable form. MIB Viewer does this entirely in your browser, for MIBs already in its database or ones you upload yourself.

What is an OID lookup tool?

An OID lookup tool resolves an OID — a dotted numeric address like 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1 — to the object it identifies, and vice versa: name to OID. MIB Viewer's OID search does both, and shows the object's full definition and its exact position in the MIB tree, not just a bare name.

Is MIB Viewer free to use?

Yes — browsing MIBs, searching OIDs, uploading your own MIB files, and reading the guides are all free, with no account required. MIB Viewer Desktop is a separate paid native app for people who want MIBs saved locally across sessions and offline access, but the web tool itself has no paywall.

Can I look up a MIB from a specific vendor?

Yes — use Search Vendor MIBs under Tools to list every MIB a given vendor has published, searchable by vendor name or IANA enterprise number.
